Spirit Airlines Shuts Down After Failed $500M Federal Bailout
National Desk
May 2, 2026
Spirit Aviation Holdings announced early Saturday that it was "regretfully" beginning an immediate wind-down of operations after exhausting all rescue options. CEO Dave Davis said the airline had reached a restructuring agreement with bondholders in March that would have allowed it to emerge from bankruptcy, but "the sudden and sustained rise in fuel prices in recent weeks ultimately has left us with no alternative but to pursue an orderly wind-down." The carrier automatically cancelled all flights and advised passengers not to go to airports, promising automatic refunds for tickets purchased with credit or debit cards through its booking system.
The Trump administration declined to make a last-ditch effort to save the airline, according to people familiar with the matter. The proposed bailout would have given the federal government a 90% equity stake in Spirit. Spirit CEO Davis cited "recent material increase in oil prices" brought on by the Iran war and "other pressures on the business" as the primary factors that "significantly impacted Spirit's financial outlook." The airline noted that "with no additional funding available to the Company, Spirit had no choice but to begin this wind-down."
Texas residents who relied on Spirit's budget fares to cities like Dallas, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio will need to book alternative flights on competitors including Southwest Airlines, Frontier Airlines, and major carriers. Spirit's second bankruptcy filing in August 2025 had already signaled severe distress when the airline disclosed it had "substantial doubt" about its ability to continue operating. The carrier had previously filed for bankruptcy in 2024 as the aviation industry struggled with post-pandemic recovery and operational pressures.
