Special Marine Warning Issued: Seek Safe Harbor on Mississippi, Chandeleur Sounds

Boaters in the Mississippi Sound, Chandeleur Sound, and coastal waters from Pascagoula, Mississippi, to Stake Island out 20 nautical miles, must move to safe harbor immediately. The National Weather Service in New Orleans has issued a Special Marine Warning, effective until 10:45 PM CDT tonight, September 21.

Strong thunderstorms were detected at 10:02 PM CDT along a line from 9 nautical miles northeast of Pascagoula to near Gulfport, moving south at 25 knots. These storms are capable of producing wind gusts up to 34 knots. Small craft could experience damage from briefly higher winds and suddenly higher waves. Dangerous lightning and heavy rain are also possible.

Locations impacted include Mississippi Sound, Gulf Park Estates, Ocean Springs, Ship Island, Horn Island, Biloxi, Pascagoula, Cat Island, and Gulfport. All mariners are advised to seek safe harbor and remain there until these hazardous weather conditions pass.
