Skip the State Capital. Go to the County Seat Instead.

Staff Writer
May 24, 2026

Here's what nobody tells you about road trips: the capital city is a trap. It's got the museum everyone's heard of, the overpriced hotel restaurants, and enough one-way streets to make you question your life choices. But twenty minutes away, in whatever county seat nobody's heard of, there's an entire functioning town where locals still eat lunch together and the bartender knows your order by your third visit.

I'm talking about the place where the courthouse still dominates the town square. Where there's a diner that's been in the same location since 1987 and they haven't updated the menu because it was perfect then and it's perfect now. Where you can park literally anywhere because nobody's fighting you for spots, and you can spend an afternoon walking around without worrying about Instagram crowds or ticket lines.

The courthouse square is your anchor. Park on whatever side has the most shade—you're not getting a ticket, and honestly, locals park however they want anyway. Walk the perimeter. There's always a café that opens at 6 a.m. for the lawyers and court staff. Order whatever sandwich is under a plastic dome. It will be better than you expect.

Hit the one bar that's been there since your parents were young. Order a beer. Talk to whoever sits next to you. This is where the actual conversations happen—not the performative stuff, the real stories about what's actually going on in the county. You'll learn more about local history in thirty minutes than from any plaque.

Here's what will surprise you: the public library. County seat libraries are disproportionately good. Someone cared about them. There are usually local history archives, weird local collections, and a librarian who's been there for twenty years and can tell you where to find literally anything. Even if you're not into libraries, go in for five minutes. The building alone is usually worth it.

The thing about county seats is they're built on function, not tourism. The buildings are real. The businesses aren't trying to attract you—they're just trying to serve the people who live there. Which, paradoxically, makes them infinitely more worth visiting than somewhere trying very hard to be charming.

Next time you're planning a weekend, skip the capital. Look for the county seat. The one with the big courthouse and the square and absolutely nothing designed to impress you. That's where you'll actually eat good food, meet interesting people, and remember why you started taking road trips in the first place.
