Maitland Sinkhole Stabilizes; Road Work Begins Thursday
Engineers determined Wednesday that the 25-foot-wide sinkhole on Wymore Road has stabilized, clearing the way for reconstruction to begin Thursday.
Orange County Public Works filled the cavity with tens of thousands of gallons of water Monday and again Tuesday. While the water initially drained away, the sinkhole maintained a steady water level by Tuesday evening, indicating it has stopped expanding.
The sinkhole opened just after midnight Friday, May 15, consuming both lanes of the county-maintained road. Orange County will monitor the site Wednesday and allow it to dry. If conditions hold, crews will excavate the site, remove broken asphalt and road base, and pour concrete to seal the cavity.
Drivers should continue following detour signs routing traffic south on Hope Road and north on Oranole Road.
