Maitland Sinkhole Stabilizes; Wymore Road Repairs Start Thursday
Orange County engineers determined Monday that a 25-foot sinkhole on Wymore Road has stabilized after tests showed water held a steady level in the cavity for the first time since the road collapsed early Friday, May 15.
County crews filled the sinkhole with tens of thousands of gallons of water Monday and Tuesday. The water drained initially but remained stable by Tuesday afternoon, indicating the hole will not expand further.
Workers will monitor the site Wednesday and allow it to dry. If conditions hold, construction crews will begin Thursday, excavating the damaged area, removing broken asphalt and base layers, then pouring concrete to seal the cavity.
The sinkhole forced traffic onto detour routes at Hope Road to the south and Oranole Road to the north since Friday morning.
