Sheriff Warns of 'Quishing' Scams Using Fake QR Codes

Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno is alerting Alva residents to a scam known as "quishing," in which fraudsters use fake QR codes to direct people to malicious websites that steal personal and financial information.

Scammers place the codes on parking meters, gas pumps, transit kiosks, restaurant menus, delivery notices, and unsolicited packages. Since QR code destinations remain hidden until scanned, victims cannot verify legitimacy beforehand.

To protect yourself, inspect QR codes for stickers placed over existing signs—a red flag for fraud. Visit official websites by typing the address directly into your browser instead of scanning. Keep your phone's operating system and applications updated.

If you fall victim to a quishing scam, contact your bank immediately to report unauthorized transactions. Report suspicious activity to the Lee County Sheriff's Office at 239-477-1000.

The Sheriff's Office offers free crime prevention programs. Neighborhood associations, businesses, and organizations can schedule a session by calling 239-477-1CRU.
