Severe Thunderstorm Warning: Elbert County Residents Seek Immediate Shelter

ELBERT, CO – IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED: The National Weather Service (NWS) in Denver has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Elbert County, effective immediately until 10:45 PM MDT tonight, September 20.

Residents in Elbert, Elizabeth, Kiowa, Ponderosa Park, and Fondis should seek shelter indoors in a well-built structure and stay away from windows. This storm, located 5 miles north of Elbert and moving southeast at 20 mph, is producing dangerous conditions.

Hazards include golf ball size hail and 60 mph wind gusts. Trained spotters have already reported quarter-sized hail near Elizabeth. These conditions can cause injury to people and animals outdoors. Expect significant damage to roofs, siding, windows, and vehicles. Wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees is also anticipated. Hail accumulation on roadways may create hazardous travel conditions.

The NWS advises that this storm is capable of producing damaging winds. Secure loose outdoor items and ensure all family members and pets are in a safe location. The warning expires at 10:45 PM MDT.
