Senator Rand Paul, R-Ky., stated he is considering contempt proceedings against Dr. Anthony Fauci. Senator Paul’s office requested documents and communications from Dr. Fauci related to the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic. The senator's office indicated these documents would provide insight into the information Dr. Fauci provided to Congress during his tenure. Dr. Fauci previously served as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and as chief medical advisor to the president. He retired from public service in December 2022. In a separate development, the U.S. government implemented new regulations concerning asylum eligibility. The new rule, which took effect recently, presumes most individuals who cross the U.S. southern border unlawfully are ineligible for asylum.
