Senate Panel Recommends Contempt Charges for Fauci

WASHINGTON – A U.S. Senate committee voted to recommend holding Dr. Anthony Fauci in contempt of Congress. The Republican-led panel advanced the contempt referral to the Justice Department. This action follows an investigation into the origins of COVID-19.

The Senate Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic conducted the vote. The committee seeks a charge of contempt against Fauci related to his testimony and cooperation with the panel's inquiry.

The contempt recommendation means the committee formally requests the Justice Department to pursue legal action against Fauci. The department will then decide whether to bring charges.

Fauci served as the Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) for 38 years. He also acted as the Chief Medical Advisor to seven U.S. presidents. His tenure at NIAID concluded in December 2022.

The committee's action stems from its ongoing probe into the COVID-19 pandemic. The investigation has focused on the virus's emergence and the U.S. government's response.
