Senate Approves Sanctions Legislation Targeting Russia and Iran

WASHINGTON – The Senate approved a bill imposing sanctions on Russia and Iran. Senators voted 98-2 on the measure, which became known as the Lindsey Graham Countering Russian Aggression and Confronting Iran Act.

Republicans and Democrats supported the bill. Senator Bob Menendez, a Democrat from New Jersey, stated, "This legislation sends a clear message to Moscow and Tehran." Senator Ben Cardin, a Democrat from Maryland, described the bill as "a necessary response to ongoing threats."

Senator Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, introduced the original version of the bill in January. He died unexpectedly in February. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, spoke about Graham's commitment to national security. "Lindsey dedicated his career to protecting American interests," McConnell said.

The bill targets individuals and entities involved in destabilizing activities. It specifically addresses Russian interference in democratic processes and Iran's ballistic missile program. President Donald Trump has indicated he will sign the bill into law.
