Seattle Port's $500M Terminal 5 Upgrade Positions Puget Sound as Mega-Vessel Hub
Managing members of the Northwest Seaport Alliance—port commissioners from Seattle and Tacoma—broke ground at Terminal 5 on a $500 million modernization project designed to handle the shipping industry's largest container vessels simultaneously. The project will make the 185-acre terminal "big ship ready," allowing it to accommodate vessels up to 18,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units), compared to the current capacity of 14,000 TEU vessels that regularly call at Puget Sound ports.
The port commissions voted in April to fund the project with $340 million in construction funds, while private terminal operator SSA Terminals is contributing up to $160 million. International Longshore and Warehouse Workers Local 19 and SSA Terminals leadership joined port officials at the groundbreaking ceremony, underscoring the project's importance to both labor and private industry stakeholders in the region.
Economic projections underscore Terminal 5's significance to the regional economy. The modernization is estimated to result in 6,600 new direct jobs and generate more than $2 billion in business activity. The terminal will open in two phases, with one major berth ready to handle international container cargo in spring of 2021, and the second berth operational in 2023, allowing the facility to operate at full capacity.
The expansion reflects growing competition among West Coast ports to accommodate mega-ships and capture international trade. As global supply chains shift and container vessels exceed 18,000 TEU capacity, ports that cannot handle these vessels risk losing major shipping lines. Seattle-Tacoma's investment positions the Puget Sound as a critical hub for Pacific trade and positions the region to compete with ports in Long Beach, Los Angeles, and Oakland.
