Saudi Oil Pipeline Shut Down After Drone Attacks, Red Sea Shipping Under Threat

Saudi Arabia shut down its East-West oil pipeline on Tuesday after drone attacks targeted two pumping stations along the route. The attacks, which caused fires, prompted the immediate closure of the pipeline.

Two pumping stations, located in Afif and Dawadmi, were struck. Saudi Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih confirmed the attacks, stating they aimed to disrupt global oil supplies.

The approximately 750-mile pipeline, also known as Petroline, transports crude oil from Saudi Arabia's eastern oil fields to its Red Sea port of Yanbu. The pipeline has a capacity of about 5 million barrels per day. No immediate information was available regarding the extent of the damage or the timeline for resuming operations.

Separately, Houthi forces in Yemen announced they had taken control of al-Duwaimah island. This island is situated near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a narrow waterway connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean. The strait is a crucial chokepoint for international oil shipments and commercial traffic.

Houthi officials stated their forces would use the island to monitor maritime traffic. They also indicated potential future actions to impede shipping in the strait. These developments occur amidst ongoing regional tensions.
