Salvadoran TPS Decision Undecided Past Deadline

WASHINGTON – The Trump administration has not yet announced a decision on the temporary protected status (TPS) for an estimated 200,000 immigrants from El Salvador. The deadline for this decision passed without any public statement from the administration.

The absence of an announcement has created uncertainty regarding the future of these individuals in the United States. Many people affected by the program now hope the administration will grant another six-month extension of their protected status.

The Department of Homeland Security manages the Temporary Protected Status program. It allows foreign nationals from certain countries to reside and work in the United States if their home countries experience conditions that prevent their safe return. The U.S. government initially granted TPS to Salvadorans following a series of earthquakes in El Salvador in 2001.
