An Active Aid to Navigation: The Lighthouse Helps Track Right Whales

Saint Augustine Lighthouse Aids Right Whale Conservation Efforts

SAINT AUGUSTINE, FL – April 16, 2026 – The iconic Saint Augustine Lighthouse continues its long-standing role as a beacon for mariners, but it's also playing a crucial part in the conservation of one of the ocean's most endangered species: the North Atlantic Right Whale.

While the lighthouse's primary function remains guiding ships safely along Florida's First Coast, its strategic location offers a unique vantage point for spotting these massive marine mammals. During their calving season, which typically runs from December through March, right whales migrate to the warmer waters off the coasts of Florida and Georgia. With fewer than 360 individuals estimated to be left, every sighting is vital for researchers and conservationists.

Local residents and visitors to the Nation's Oldest City often inquire about the whales, especially during the winter months. The elevated position of the lighthouse provides an excellent platform for trained observers to scan the horizon for the distinctive V-shaped blow of a right whale. These observations contribute to a broader network of data collection that helps track the whales' movements, identify individuals, and monitor their health.

The information gathered from such elevated observation points, including the Saint Augustine Lighthouse, is critical for implementing protective measures, such as vessel speed restrictions in designated zones, which aim to reduce the risk of ship strikes – a major threat to the species. While the official whale season has recently concluded, the ongoing vigilance and data collection efforts from various coastal points, including our own lighthouse, underscore Saint Augustine's quiet but important contribution to global conservation.

The Saint Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum, a non-profit organization, continues to operate and maintain this historic structure, ensuring its continued service to both maritime safety and environmental stewardship.
