Ronda Rousey's Fighter Pay Advocacy Could Ripple Through California's MMA Scene
National Desk
April 17, 2026
**Why it matters locally:** Ronda Rousey's vocal stance on fighter pay directly impacts California due to the state's vibrant mixed martial arts (MMA) community and the presence of numerous fighters, gyms, and promotions within its borders. The potential for increased fighter compensation, as highlighted by Rousey's upcoming Netflix event, could influence the financial landscape for aspiring and established MMA athletes in California, potentially leading to higher expectations for local promotions and even the UFC fights held within the state.

Ronda Rousey spoke about fighter compensation at a press conference last Wednesday promoting the May 16 event she is headlining with Gina Carano on Netflix.
Rousey, since confirming her return to fighting, has discussed the structure of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). At the press conference, she addressed the topic of earnings in mixed martial arts.
Rousey drew a comparison between the compensation offered by Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), the organization hosting the upcoming event, and the UFC's pay structure.
According to Rousey, the minimum purse for fighters on the May 16 card will be $40,000. "I think it’s really important that we raise the ceiling, but also raise the floor, and one thing that I’m really proud on this card is that the absolute minimum anybody will walk away with, even if they don’t have a big, long record, and even if they lose, it’s $40,000," Rousey said.
She added, "If you fight 3 times a year, that is much more than a living wage."
Entry-level UFC fighter pay has been reported to be approximately $12,000 per fight, however, the UFC has not confirmed or released official figures.
Following a $7.7 billion Paramount deal, UFC executives have acknowledged the payment system as an area for potential revision.
The UFC recently doubled Fight Night bonuses and introduced $25,000 incentives for fighters securing finishes. Broader questions regarding base pay are ongoing.
