IRVINE, Calif. -- Rivian Automotive Inc. today confirmed a definitive agreement with AT&T to provide the telecommunications company with electric delivery vans and fleet management services. The initial order includes a commitment to purchase over 5,000 Rivian vans, with the potential to scale to tens of thousands of vehicles over the contract's lifespan. The total value of the deal is estimated at $5 billion, making it Rivian's largest commercial order to date.
Under the terms of the agreement, Rivian will supply AT&T with a customized version of its electric delivery van, engineered specifically for the unique needs of AT&T's field technicians. The vans will incorporate enhanced safety features, optimized storage solutions for equipment and tools, and advanced connectivity technologies. Rivian will also provide AT&T with a suite of fleet management services, including charging infrastructure support, maintenance, and data analytics to optimize vehicle utilization.
"This agreement with AT&T is a testament to the strength of our commercial vehicle platform and our commitment to helping businesses transition to sustainable transportation solutions," a Rivian spokesperson stated. "We are proud to partner with AT&T on their journey to electrify their fleet, and we are excited to deliver vehicles that will help them reduce their emissions and enhance their operational efficiency."
AT&T's decision to partner with Rivian aligns with its broader sustainability goals, which include achieving net-zero emissions across its operations by 2035. The telecom giant anticipates that the deployment of electric delivery vans will significantly reduce its carbon footprint and contribute to cleaner air in the communities it serves.
Industry analysts view the deal as a major win for Rivian, providing a crucial revenue stream and bolstering its credibility in the competitive electric vehicle market. While Rivian has faced production challenges in the past, securing a large, long-term contract with a major corporation like AT&T validates its technology and demonstrates its ability to meet the demands of commercial fleet operators.
The first Rivian vans are expected to be delivered to AT&T in early 2027, with the full deployment planned over the following years.
