Punta Gorda to Upgrade Traffic Message System
Punta Gorda is set to enhance its traffic management capabilities with a significant upgrade to its existing traffic message channel system. The City Council approved a new contract last week to replace outdated equipment and integrate more advanced technology, aiming to provide residents and visitors with more timely and accurate traffic information.
The project will focus on replacing the current static message boards with dynamic digital signs at key intersections and along major thoroughfares, including US-41, which passes by the beloved Gilchrist Park, and Taylor Road. These new signs will allow for real-time updates on traffic incidents, road closures, and alternative routes, which is particularly crucial during peak tourist season, when visitors flock to the scenic waterfront and historic downtown, and in the event of severe weather.
City Engineer, Michael Thompson, stated that the upgrade is a proactive measure to improve traffic flow and public safety. "This investment will allow us to communicate critical information instantly, helping to reduce congestion and improve response times during emergencies," Thompson explained during the council meeting on April 2nd. The project is expected to begin in late May and be completed by early next year, with minimal disruption to traffic during installation.
