Djokovic, a six-time Italian Open champion, led after the first set, taking it 6-2. Prizmic responded by winning the second set 6-2 and closed out the match with a 6-4 third set. This result marks Djokovic's first opening-match loss at the Italian Open in his career.
This loss represents only Djokovic's sixth defeat at this stage of a Masters tournament since the format change in 2009. Prior to this match, Djokovic's last defeat at this stage of a Masters event occurred in September 2010. The match was Djokovic's final tournament appearance before the upcoming Roland Garros.
