Predators Stun Sharks in Triple-OT Thriller, Tie Series 2-2
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- In a marathon that tested endurance and willpower, Predators center Mike Fisher delivered at 1:03 a.m. Friday, roofing a backhand past Sharks goalie Martin Jones at 111:12 of game time to clinch a 4-3 victory in Game 4 of their Western Conference second-round series. The triumph, the longest in Predators franchise history and the longest of the 2016 Stanley Cup playoffs, tied the best-of-seven matchup at 2-2 and sent Tennessee fans into a frenzy after James Neal's late third-period equalizer at 4:21 made it 3-3.
Goaltender Pekka Rinne stood tall in net, turning aside 44 saves despite the Predators killing off six penalties, including one just before Fisher's heroics. Fisher, who also scored earlier in the game, became the toast of Music City for his clutch performance in the triple-overtime classic, the first third overtime in NHL playoffs that year. Bridgestone Arena, packed with gold-clad supporters waving foam fingers, erupted as the clock ticked past regulation and two overtimes without a goal.
The series now heads to San Jose for Games 5 and beyond, with Nashville's resilient squad carrying momentum from this home-ice gem, their first overtime win at Bridgestone. Across Tennessee, from Nashville's honky-tonk bars to tailgates in Knoxville, Preds Nation celebrated the grit of a team that refused to fold, boosting hopes for a deep playoff run in the Volunteer State. Rinne's shutdown effort and Fisher's double underscored the blue-collar hockey that has captivated the region.
