Pre-Cancer Concerns at Advanced Dermatology

Spring Hill residents are encouraged to prioritize their skin health, particularly as local dermatologists report an increase in pre-cancerous skin conditions. Advanced Dermatology, located on Main Street, has noted a significant number of patients presenting with actinic keratoses, commonly known as AKs, during routine skin screenings.

Actinic keratoses are rough, scaly patches on the skin that develop from years of sun exposure. While not cancerous themselves, they are considered pre-cancers because, if left untreated, they have the potential to turn into squamous cell carcinoma, a common type of skin cancer. Dr. Emily Carter, a dermatologist at Advanced Dermatology, emphasized the importance of early detection and treatment.

“We’ve seen a noticeable uptick in AK diagnoses among our Spring Hill patients,” Dr. Carter stated. “This isn't necessarily cause for alarm, but it is a strong reminder for everyone, especially those who spend a lot of time outdoors enjoying local golf courses and parks, to schedule regular skin checks. Early intervention for AKs is straightforward and highly effective in preventing more serious issues.”

The clinic advises residents to be vigilant about changes in their skin, particularly on sun-exposed areas such as the face, scalp, ears, neck, hands, and forearms. Symptoms to watch for include rough patches that feel like sandpaper, red or brown spots, or persistent dry, scaly areas that don't heal.

Advanced Dermatology offers various treatment options for actinic keratoses, including cryotherapy (freezing), topical medications, and photodynamic therapy. Residents concerned about their skin health or who have not had a recent skin screening are encouraged to contact Advanced Dermatology to schedule an appointment.

This local trend serves as a timely reminder for the Spring Hill community, with its active outdoor lifestyle in Hernando County, about the cumulative effects of sun exposure and the critical role of preventative care in maintaining long-term health.
