Portsmouth NH Summer Festivals Spark Record Tourism Surge
Portsmouth's tourism scene is exploding with record reservations for its packed summer 2025 festival calendar, as visitors flock to the Granite State's Seacoast for events blending music, food and maritime heritage. The buzz began with New Hampshire Public Radio's report on unprecedented bookings amid post-pandemic recovery, now confirmed by surging interest in staples like the 37th Annual WOKQ Chowder Festival on June 7 at Prescott Park Arts Festival. Dozens of restaurants will compete with hot chowder recipes alongside live music, while the 48th Annual Market Square Day on June 14 transforms downtown into a car-free zone from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., kicking off with a 10K road race and dual performance stages.
Family-friendly draws are amplifying the influx, with Pro Portsmouth's Children's Day on May 4, 2025, expecting over 10,000 attendees for activities, entertainment and ice cream sundaes sponsored by downtown merchants and civic groups. The 5th Annual Piscataqua Riverfest on July 12 offers free admission to a traditional boat show at Strawbery Banke Museum, 14 Hancock St., Gundalow sails from Prescott Park and hands-on nonprofit activities. Music lovers are snapping up tickets for Music by the Sea at Seacoast Science Center, featuring RDMTION on July 10, Jumbo Circus Peanuts on July 17, Joshua Tree on July 24 and more, with member prices at $20-$25 and non-members at $25-$30.
Local closures and series underscore the economic lift: Pleasant Street shuts for Summer in the Street concerts on select Saturdays from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., Strawbery Banke's Tuesdays on the Terrace runs June 17 to August 26, and Prescott Park's public reservations opened May 5. City-hosted Free Friday Concerts at the Portsmouth Senior Activity Center, including Bad Penny on July 17 evening, add no-cost appeal. Looking to 2026, the 26th Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival is set for September 26-27, signaling sustained momentum for Portsmouth's $1 billion-plus tourism economy.
