Pompano Beach Deputy Shooting: What We Know So Far
A man was killed after an hours-long standoff with Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies at a vacant home in Pompano Beach, and officials say the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is now investigating the shooting, according to reporting from CBS News Miami, WSVN, NBC Miami and the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
According to authorities, the call began as a report of a suspicious person trespassing at a vacant home in the 2300 block of Bay Drive. Deputies said the man barricaded himself inside after officers arrived, and negotiators and SWAT remained on scene for roughly four to five hours before deputies opened fire.
Officials said no deputies were injured, according to Sheriff Gregory Tony. Coverage identified the suspect as Esterlin Appolon and described him as a convicted felon with prior convictions.
Later reporting said BSO described the suspect as armed and said he had attacked or pointed a gun at deputies or a K-9 before he was shot. Authorities also said the man died from gunfire by deputies, and that a self-inflicted gunshot wound was not fatal.
The response drew multiple Broward Sheriff’s Office units, including crime scene investigators who remained on scene for hours collecting evidence. The scale of the operation suggests a prolonged tactical response, with negotiators and SWAT deployed before the shooting, rather than a brief patrol encounter.
Dispatch records show 30 similar officer-involved shooting incidents in Pompano Beach over the past six months.
FDLE is handling the outside investigation, which is standard procedure in deputy-involved shootings, and BSO internal affairs was also reported to be part of the review. Officials have not announced any road closures or evacuation orders, and no additional public briefing time had been released in the available reporting.
Day.News will continue to update this story as officials release more information.
