Pompano Beach Deputy Shooting: What We Know So Far

A man was killed after a Broward County Sheriff's Office deputy-involved shooting in Pompano Beach, according to local reporting and BSO statements. Officials said the shooting followed a prolonged standoff at a vacant home and is now under investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

According to BSO, deputies first responded to reports of a suspicious man trespassing at a vacant home, where the man barricaded himself inside. Sheriff Gregory Tony said deputies tried to negotiate with him for four to five hours before gunfire was exchanged. Authorities said the suspect was armed, and BSO said he attacked a K-9 during the incident.

Officials said the fatal injuries were caused by deputies' gunfire, not by a self-inflicted gunshot wound that was also reported during the confrontation. Sheriff Tony said no deputies were injured. BSO also said the suspect was a convicted felon.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken over the investigation as standard procedure in officer-involved shootings, while BSO crime scene investigators are also processing the scene. Public reporting describes the case as active and early-stage.

Emergency crews and law enforcement remained on scene for hours, indicating a major tactical response involving negotiators, deputies and a K-9 unit. That kind of response typically signals that officers were attempting to resolve a barricaded-person situation before moving in.

Dispatch records show 29 similar officer-involved shooting incidents in Pompano Beach over the past six months. Reporting also places this incident at a vacant home on the 2300 block of Bay Drive, which conflicts with the initial dispatch address.

The suspect was later identified in reporting as Esterlin Apollon, with one outlet listing him as 31 and another as 38.
