Pompano Beach Brush Fire: What We Know So Far
A brush fire in Pompano Beach led to the discovery of a badly charred body, and officials say the death and the fire’s cause are under active investigation. This is what we know so far.
According to the City of Pompano Beach, the only confirmed incident found in official reporting was at 3161 N. Dixie Highway, not 925 SE 1st St. Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded at about 11 a.m. after drivers on Dixie Highway reported the fire, and crews found the remains of a badly charred body while extinguishing the blaze.
Officials said the deceased person’s sex has not been identified. The city also said numerous encampments were found in the wooded area where the fire occurred. The fire has been extinguished, according to the advisory.
The response involved Pompano Beach Fire Rescue, with follow-up investigation by City of Pompano Beach Fire Investigators, the State Fire Marshal and the Broward Sheriff’s Office. The city’s advisory indicates investigators are examining both how the fire started and how the person died.
Dispatch records show there have been two similar brush-fire incidents in Pompano Beach in the past six months.
Officials have not reported road closures or traffic impacts. The advisory says the fire was reported by people driving along Dixie Highway, but no additional public safety alerts were confirmed in the available reporting.
What happens next will depend on findings from the city fire investigators, the State Fire Marshal and Broward County investigators, who are still working the scene and reviewing the death.
