Pocono Wildlife Center Rescues 318 Pigeons in Devastating PA Hoarding Case

The Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center in eastern Pennsylvania sprang into action on Tuesday after a call from Wilkes-Barre animal control about a 'sad and devastating hoarding situation.' Initially informed of 170 to 200 pigeons, rescuers discovered 318 birds crammed into a single home, many emaciated, injured, and crawling with mites and bird lice.[1] Twelve pigeons were so severely compromised that humane euthanasia was necessary, the center reported in a Facebook update.[1]
The birds' plight underscores the hidden toll of animal hoarding in Pennsylvania's rural and urban pockets. Pigeons, often dismissed as common pests, revealed profound suffering: neurological diseases, untreated injuries, and human habituation rendering them unable to survive in the wild.[1] 'They're only pigeons,' some commenters might say, but the center countered that saving wildlife means aiding all creatures, fluffy or not, emphasizing pigeons' intelligence and strong homing instincts that could lead to fatal exhaustion if released prematurely.[1]
An investigation is underway by local authorities into the hoarding case, as reported in video footage from the scene.[2] The center, already stretched thin with hundreds of native wildlife babies in care this spring, urgently seeks adoptions within two weeks to free up resources.[1] Pennsylvania residents interested in giving these resilient birds a second chance can contact the Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center directly through their social media channels.
