Pirates Call Up Baseball's Top Prospect Konnor Griffin to Pittsburgh

National Desk
April 29, 2026
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates promoted Konnor Griffin, their top prospect and baseball's overall No. 1-ranked minor leaguer, from Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday to shore up a starting rotation plagued by injuries and poor performance. Griffin, a 20-year-old, 6-foot-3 right-hander listed at 222 pounds who bats and throws right, rocketed through the Pirates' system after being drafted in 2022. Pirates GM Ben Cherington and manager Derek Shelton made the move amid a dismal 2026 start, with the team's ERA hovering above 5.00 through April.[1][2][3] Griffin's rapid ascent includes a breakout Triple-A stint, where he posted a 2.45 ERA over his last five starts, striking out 45 batters in 29.2 innings. The Pennsylvania product, who honed his skills at nearby high school showcases before signing with Pittsburgh, transitions from shortstop to the mound, showcasing a fastball touching 98 mph and a devastating slider. He joins a rotation missing ace Paul Skenes, sidelined with elbow inflammation since mid-April, and Bailey Falter, on the 60-day IL with a forearm strain.[1][2] Expected to debut this weekend at PNC Park against the Baltimore Orioles, Griffin becomes the first teenager to reach the majors since Juan Soto's 2018 debut with Washington. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette insider Noah Hiles reported the club views Griffin as ready, citing his minor-league dominance: a 1.98 ERA across High-A and Double-A stops earlier this season. Fans at the 41,000-seat riverfront stadium anticipate electric crowds, echoing the buzz around hometown hero Skenes' 2024 debut.[1][3] The call-up injects hope into a Pirates season teetering at .450 winning percentage, with Pittsburgh seven games back in the NL Central. Cherington praised Griffin's poise: 'He's dominated every level; now he faces the show.' Triple-A Indianapolis manager Miguel Perez added, 'Konnor's mound presence is major-league caliber.'[1][3]
