Philadelphia's Cruise Industry Returns After 15-Year Hiatus

Philadelphia reclaims its status as a cruise destination today with the Norwegian Jewel's inaugural departure from PhilaPort's SouthPort Marine Terminal Complex.[1] The ship, which underwent refurbishment in 2025 and can accommodate 2,330 guests, represents the first cruise operations from the city since 2011, when the terminal closed.[2] Norwegian Cruise Line secured a seven-year exclusive berthing agreement through March 31, 2033, cementing Philadelphia's return to the cruise industry.[3]
The Norwegian Jewel will operate through October 17, 2026, offering seven- to nine-day voyages to Bermuda during spring and summer months, with overnight stays allowing passengers to explore the island's turquoise waters and pink-sand beaches.[1] Beginning September 5, the ship shifts to 10- and 11-day open-jaw voyages to Canada and New England, calling at ports including Bar Harbor, Maine; Boston; Halifax; Charlottetown; and Saguenay.[1] The itinerary provides Philadelphia-area residents an alternative to flying to Florida ports, reducing travel costs for tri-state cruisers.[2]
PhilaPort's cruise operations launch amid significant economic opportunity. Officials project that if growth continues in the cruise segment, the industry could generate more than 2,000 direct, indirect, and induced jobs and over $40 million in annual county and state tax revenue by 2028.[1] The Norwegian Pearl will join operations beginning November 2026, further expanding Philadelphia's cruise capacity and establishing Norwegian as the exclusive cruise operator from the port.[2]
The timing carries symbolic weight: PhilaPort's cruise terminal opening coincides with the 250th anniversary of the United States, underscoring Philadelphia's historic role as an international port city.[3] For Pennsylvania residents and the broader region, the Norwegian Jewel's arrival signals a competitive advantage—passengers can now embark on extended voyages from their doorstep rather than traveling to distant hubs.
