Penn State's QB Hunt Stalls: Five-Star Mencl Chooses Oregon
National Desk
April 29, 2026
The State College football program's pursuit of elite quarterback talent suffered a major setback as Will Mencl, Rivals' top-ranked quarterback in the 2027 class, announced his commitment to Oregon on April 22. Mencl, a 6-3 signal caller from Chandler, Arizona, had visited Penn State in early April and positioned the Nittany Lions as one of his three finalists alongside Oregon and Auburn. For Matt Campbell, who arrived at Penn State and rapidly elevated the program's recruiting standing to No. 6 nationally in just four weeks, the loss represents a critical missed opportunity at the sport's most important position.
Campbell offered Mencl in January, and the quarterback's visit to University Park came during spring practice. Mencl had signaled his intent to make a quick decision, telling Rivals he wanted to be committed "after coming out of these visits" and provided a rough timeline of "mid to late April." The five-star prospect emphasized he didn't want the recruitment to drag out unnecessarily, making the urgency of his April 22 announcement clear.
With Mencl off the board, Penn State has shifted focus to 4-star Peter Bourque and 3-star Will Wood as its remaining quarterback targets for 2027. Bourque, a 6-4 prospect from Tabor Academy in Massachusetts, ranks seventh nationally at his position and initially committed to Michigan before reopening his recruitment in February. He has visited Georgia, Penn State, and Miami in recent weeks and holds offers from Miami, Colorado, Georgia, Oregon, and Virginia Tech. Wood, a 6-2, 220-pound quarterback from Massachusetts, received his Penn State offer this week after watching spring practice in State College and has offers from West Virginia, Boston College, Wake Forest, and North Carolina.
Despite the quarterback setback, Penn State has built momentum elsewhere in its 2027 recruiting class. The Nittany Lions received 11 commitments over the past month, including 4-star safety Kei'Shjuan Telfair, 4-star tight end Cooper Terwilliger, and 4-star receiver Landon Blum. Campbell's ability to construct a top-10 recruiting class provides a foundation, but securing a premier quarterback prospect remains essential to solidifying Penn State's long-term trajectory under the new coaching regime.
