AAA Issues Holiday Tree Transport Warning for Panama City Drivers
As Panama City families prepare to select their Christmas trees, AAA is urging local drivers to prioritize safety when transporting their festive cargo home. An improperly secured tree poses a significant risk not only to the driver's vehicle but also to others on the road.
Mark Jenkins, a spokesman for AAA – The Auto Club Group, emphasized the importance of secure transport. "Nothing will ruin your holiday spirit faster than watching your Christmas tree bounce down the highway," said Jenkins. "AAA encourages drivers to treat tree transport as seriously as any other cargo. When you go to the lot, ensure you bring the necessary equipment to secure your tree. A few extra minutes of preparation can ensure your holiday starts safely and your tree arrives intact."
A previous AAA study revealed a concerning statistic: nearly one in five Christmas tree buyers reported that their tree fell off or out of their vehicle during transport. Loose trees can cause damage to vehicles, including scratches, torn door seals, and distorted window frames. More critically, they can become dangerous projectiles, leading to serious accidents.
Research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety highlights the broader issue of road debris, which causes an estimated 200,000 crashes annually, resulting in approximately 39,000 injuries and 500 deaths. A substantial portion of this debris consists of improperly secured items, such as Christmas trees, that detach from vehicles.
To help Panama City residents transport their trees safely, AAA offers the following tips:
- Plan Ahead: Bring strong rope or ratchet straps, an old blanket, and gloves to the tree lot.
- Wrap It Up: Ask the tree lot to wrap the tree in netting to reduce wind resistance during transit.
- Protect Your Vehicle: Use a blanket to prevent scratches and damage to your vehicle's roof.
- Trunk First: Load the tree with the trunk facing the front of the vehicle to minimize wind damage.
- Secure It Tightly: Tie the tree at multiple points—top, middle, and bottom—using sturdy rope or straps.
- Check Before You Drive: Tug on the tree to ensure it is firmly secured and will not shift during the journey home.
By following these simple precautions, Panama City drivers can help ensure a safe and joyful start to their holiday season, keeping both their trees and fellow motorists safe on the roads.
