ORLANDO, Fla. — A 19-year-old man faces attempted murder charges after police say he shot and injured another person Tuesday afternoon near downtown Orlando's LYNX bus station. The incident unfolded around 3:30 p.m. on North Garland Avenue, according to an Orlando Police Department news release. Officers arrived to find the victim, who had been shot while riding away on a bicycle, and transported them to a hospital in stable condition.
Lucas Araujo was arrested the same day on charges of attempted second-degree murder, tampering with evidence and discharging a firearm in public, jail records show. An arrest affidavit details that Araujo fired at the victim during the encounter. Police have not released the victim's identity or further motive, citing the ongoing investigation.
This shooting adds to a rash of gun violence in downtown Orlando. Just last week, a 17-year-old, Jaylen Dwayne Edgar, was arrested after a mass shooting at the intersection of Orange and Central avenues around 1 a.m., killing two and injuring at least 10 others, per Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith. Body camera footage captured the gunfire and subsequent takedown of the teen suspect on Orange Avenue.
Earlier incidents include an officer-involved shooting on Easter Sunday outside Thrive Cocktail Lounge at Central Boulevard and Orange Avenue, where a man in his 30s with prior drug arrests was killed after firing a gun into the air and refusing commands to drop it. Three officers, now on paid administrative leave, were uninvolved in injuries. Police noted over 500 guns seized in the area over the past year amid increased patrols.
The arrests align with broader public safety efforts as Florida grapples with urban gun violence spikes, even as the state economy thrives with unemployment at 2.8%. Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer previously declared a downtown curfew after the mass shooting. Residents near Church Street and Wall Street entertainment districts are urged to stay vigilant; report suspicious activity to Orlando Police non-emergency at 407-246-2470.
Orlando Police Department statements and Orange County jail records serve as primary sources. As of May 10, 2026, no court dates are scheduled for Araujo.
