LONDON – Organized groups reportedly exploit the United Kingdom's private rental market, according to a BBC Panorama investigation. The program detailed instances where properties were allegedly converted for illegal activities.

Landlords described experiencing such situations. One landlord, who remained anonymous, stated his London apartment was reportedly used as a brothel. Another landlord, Peter Singh, recounted finding his property in Wolverhampton significantly damaged and converted into a cannabis factory.

The investigation focused on strategies reportedly employed by these groups. They often seek properties with accommodating landlords or those in less visible locations. The groups typically pay several months' rent in advance, use fraudulent identification, and rent through intermediaries. This approach, according to the report, makes the true tenants difficult to trace for landlords or law enforcement.

Landlords interviewed by Panorama expressed challenges in regaining control of their properties. They faced financial losses from unpaid rent, property damage, and legal expenses. Local authorities have called for increased resources and enforcement powers to address these reported activities.
