Orange County Commissioners to Consider Temporary Pause on AI Data Center Development Amidst Environmental Concerns

Orange County commissioners will discuss a potential temporary pause on artificial intelligence (AI) data center development at an upcoming meeting. This discussion follows a call for a moratorium initiated by Commissioner Kelly Martinez Semrad in June.

The proposed pause, which could last for at least a year, aims to give the county time to update its policies and study the environmental impacts of these large facilities. Data centers, which support AI and other digital services, house extensive computer servers and networking gear. They are known to place significant demands on local power grids.
