One Dead, One Injured in Allapattah Midday Shooting
National Desk
May 12, 2026
Miami police responded to reports of gunshots around 12:10 p.m. Saturday near Northwest 17th Avenue and 54th Street in Allapattah, where they found two unidentified men in their 20s suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, according to a Miami Police Department statement cited by the Miami Herald. One victim died at the scene, while Miami Fire Rescue transported the other to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition. Officers took an unidentified person into custody at the scene, but it is unclear if charges will be filed, police said.
This shooting is the latest in a string of violent incidents plaguing Allapattah. Just last month, a 19-year-old was seriously injured in a shooting near Northwest 25th Avenue and 38th Street, with medics rushing him to Ryder Trauma Center in serious but stable condition, per Miami Fire Rescue and Officer Kiara Delva, Miami Police spokesperson. Earlier, in October 2025, Francisco Alexis de Leon, 36, of Miramar, was charged with attempted murder after firing shots at Republica Food & Lounge at 1260 NW 36th St. following an argument; he remains on house arrest awaiting trial, according to Miami police arrest records.
The neighborhood has also seen high-profile police confrontations, including a deadly standoff at 1439 NW 26th St. near Juan Pablo Duarte Park, where 27-year-old Mason Triana shot two officers before being found dead inside the home, Miami Police Chief Manny Morales said in a department briefing. Triana's brother, Alan Henry Triana, 38, was later arrested on charges including witness harassment in a capital felony case and possession of armor-piercing ammunition after a search uncovered weapons, per Miami-Dade jail records.
These events come amid heightened public safety concerns across Florida, including 22 arrests in a Tampa 'Teen Takeover' incident and a Martin County sex trafficking sting netting six suspects, highlighting ongoing law enforcement efforts against youth violence and exploitation. Allapattah residents near these hotspots, including areas around NW 17th Avenue, are urged to report suspicious activity to Miami police at 305-579-6111. As the state battles an 11,000-acre Everglades wildfire impacting South Florida air quality, local officials emphasize community vigilance amid broader resilience challenges.
