Ohio jobless rate hits 4.1% as state adds 12,500 positions

Ohio added 12,500 jobs in March, bringing total nonagricultural employment to 5,681,700, according to data released Friday by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. The unemployment rate's decline to 4.1% represents a significant improvement from the 4.8% rate recorded in March 2025, reflecting year-over-year job growth of 18,200 positions across the state.
Construction led the charge, adding 11,200 jobs over the past year and driving gains in goods-producing industries, which grew by 9,000 positions. Meanwhile, the private service sector expanded by 10,800 jobs, fueled by strength in private educational services, healthcare, leisure and hospitality, and professional business services. These gains offset manufacturing losses of 2,700 jobs during the same 12-month period.
County-level data from November 2025 reveals stark regional disparities in Ohio's job market. Geauga, Holmes and Medina counties posted the state's lowest unemployment rates at 2.8%, while Pike County struggled with the highest rate at 6.2%. Franklin County, home to Ohio's largest labor force, reported a 3.7% unemployment rate, reflecting the economic strength of the Columbus metropolitan area compared to rural Appalachian counties like Ross and Scioto, both at 5.5%.
Labor force participation, however, remains a concern. Ohio's participation rate slipped to 62.1% in March, down from 62.8% a year earlier, suggesting some workers have exited the job market entirely. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau indicates millions of Ohioans remain outside the official unemployment statistics—including retirees, those lacking transportation, and caregivers—a reality that complicates the picture of economic health painted by headline jobless figures.
