Oatman, Arizona: The Road Trip Where the Traffic Has Hooves

If you want a road trip that feels like it wandered off the map, drive to Oatman, Arizona, on the old Route 66 between Kingman and the California line. The road in is the main attraction: broad desert, rust-colored hills, and long stretches where your biggest driving decision is whether that distant object is a bush or a very judgmental cow.

Park in the free angled spaces along Oatman Highway/Main Street. Get there before 10 a.m. on a Saturday if you want an easy spot; by late morning, the little town can turn into a slow shuffle of cars, pedestrians, and burros. Wear shoes with actual soles, not delicate vacation sandals. The sidewalks are wooden, uneven, and occasionally decorated by animals who have been coming here longer than most of the buildings.

Start at the Oatman Hotel Restaurant and order the burger with a cold root beer. It is straightforward road-food fuel, which is exactly what you want after the drive. The walls and ceiling are covered in dollar bills left by visitors, so bring a pen if you want to add your own—but do not spend twenty minutes trying to find the one from your hometown. You will become part of the wallpaper and lose track of time.

The surprise is the burros. They are descendants of animals used by miners, and they wander through town like they own the lease. They may block the street, inspect your shopping bag, or stand beside a parked car looking like they are waiting for someone to explain the parking meter. Buy feed only from the local vendors, keep your fingers flat, and do not chase them for a photo. The burro is not your influencer.

After lunch, browse the old-time shops, then take the same winding road back toward Kingman. Give yourself at least three hours for the town, longer if you want to stop for desert photos. Oatman is not polished, and that is its whole appeal: it is dusty, odd, wonderfully theatrical, and just far enough from normal life to make a regular Saturday feel like a story you will retell.
