Oakland Park Deputy-Involved Shooting: What We Know So Far
A deputy-involved shooting in Oakland Park left one man dead after a hourslong standoff at an apartment complex, and investigators are now sorting out what led to the confrontation, according to Broward Sheriff’s Office and local news reports.
According to BSO, deputies were called to the 800 block of West Oakland Park Boulevard after a disturbance involving a man armed with knives who was threatening residents. Authorities identified the suspect as 33-year-old Kevin Dominick Almonte, who deputies said barricaded himself inside an apartment after they arrived.
BSO said Almonte also made threats involving firearms, propane tanks and bombs inside the apartment, prompting evacuations of nearby residents as deputies tried to resolve the scene. Officials said deputies spent several hours attempting to communicate with him and persuade him to surrender peacefully before the shooting occurred.
According to BSO, the shooting happened when Almonte advanced toward deputies while armed with knives. Oakland Park Fire Rescue took him to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. No other injuries were reported.
The response drew multiple law-enforcement and fire-rescue units, and the active scene lasted for several hours near West Oakland Park Boulevard. Residents were allowed to return home before 11 p.m., according to CBS News Miami.
Dispatch records show 14 similar officer-involved shooting incidents in Oakland Park over the past six months.
BSO said the deputy who fired the shot has been placed on administrative assignment while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates the shooting. BSO Internal Affairs has also opened an internal investigation.
