North Dakota's Ag-Tech Hub Expands with $15M Innovation Investment

National Desk
April 29, 2026
The Grand Farm Innovation Campus near Casselton has become the centerpiece of North Dakota's agricultural technology revolution. Agco Corp., a global farm equipment manufacturer, announced plans to build a 300-acre 'smart farm' research facility at the campus to develop precision agriculture technologies and sustainable farming practices. The facility will be led by Appareo, an Agco subsidiary based in Fargo, with agronomists, scientists, engineers and agricultural experts conducting studies designed to educate farmers on next-generation farming methods. The investment reflects broader momentum in North Dakota's ag-tech sector. North Dakota State University secured $15 million in year-one funding through the National Science Foundation's Regional Innovation Engines program, announced in 2024. This federal support underscores the state's strategic importance in agricultural innovation and positions NDSU as a core partner in advancing precision agriculture technologies across the region. Precision agriculture integration has moved beyond individual equipment manufacturers. The FarmGrid Precision Agriculture Solution, launched through Grand Farm's Innovation Site in partnership with Trilogy Networks and the Rural Cloud Initiative, now enables farmers to seamlessly connect multiple precision agriculture devices through edge computing and 5G wireless technology. The collaborative platform includes participation from Microsoft, Intel, Dakota Carrier Network and major telecommunications providers, creating a unified ecosystem for North Dakota farmers. The Casselton campus, located roughly 20 miles west of Fargo, represents a concentrated bet on agricultural innovation. Since breaking ground on its 140-acre Innovation Facility in October 2019, Grand Farm has attracted industry stakeholders and research partners focused on sustainable practices and high-value retrofit solutions. These developments position North Dakota as a proving ground for technologies that could reshape farming across the nation's agricultural heartland.
