North Dakota peace officer training academies and universities see less interest in law enforcement among students, the aging population of current officers is also contributing to this problem.

Several counties are actively seeking solutions. Increased recruitment efforts, including offering signing bonuses and highlighting the benefits of living in rural communities, are underway. There are also talks happening, and the state may issue proposals for the state legislature concerning opportunities for deputies to share resources across county lines, such as joint patrols and shared dispatch services. These would require legal action by State Senators and Representatives.
