NHS Waiting List for Planned Care Exceeds 7.7 Million, Reaching Record High
The number of people awaiting planned hospital treatment in England has reached a new record, with over 7.7 million individuals on the NHS waiting list. This increase signals potential challenges as the winter months approach.
The National Health Service (NHS) in England recorded a new high in its waiting list for planned hospital treatment, with 7.75 million individuals awaiting care as of the latest figures. This number, released by NHS England, marks an increase from the previous month's total.
Officials acknowledged that the overall waiting list figure includes an element of duplication, where individual patients may appear on multiple lists for different treatments. However, they confirmed that the number of unique patients awaiting treatment also increased during the period. The health service reported 6.5 million individual patients on waiting lists, an increase of 28,881 from the prior month.
This rise in the waiting list comes as the NHS faces ongoing pressure. The growing backlog for planned surgery suggests potential strain on the health system as it approaches the traditionally demanding winter season.
