New River Gorge Tourism Surge Pumps $108M into WV Economy

National Desk
April 27, 2026
GLEN JEAN, W.Va. — Southern West Virginia's outdoor jewels delivered a record-breaking economic jolt in 2024, with 2,080,330 visitors to New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, Bluestone National Scenic River, and Gauley River National Recreation Area spending $108.4 million in surrounding counties.[4][6] The figure marks a nearly 12% jump from 2023's $96.5 million, when 1.9 million visitors supported 1,268 jobs and generated a $116.5 million cumulative benefit, according to National Park Service reports.[1][2] New River Gorge alone drew the heaviest crowds and spending at $86.1 million last year, powering sectors like lodging (27%), restaurants (22%), gas stations (17%), and groceries (14%).[2] The boom traces back to the 2020 redesignation of New River Gorge from a national river to a full national park, a move championed by U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., who highlighted its early wins: $35.2 million in state economic benefits and 1,090 jobs by 2021.[3] 'Our visitation has increased steadily since redesignation,' park superintendent Lizzie Landsberg said, noting parallel surges in gateway communities from Fayetteville to Oak Hill.[6] In 2022, visitors spent $79.3 million, backing 1,040 jobs with $31 million in wages, a 36% visitation rise from 2017 that softened coal industry's decline in the four-county region.[5][7] Local businesses are reaping the rewards. Restaurant jobs lead at 25% of supported positions, followed by lodging (22%), recreation (10%), and retail (7%), with outfitters like Adventures on the Gorge in Lansing booking rafts and zip lines nonstop.[2] The influx helps counter manufacturing slumps, positioning the New River Gorge area as an adventure tourism powerhouse, per West Virginia University analysis.[7] As 2026 unfolds, park leaders anticipate continued growth, drawing families and thrill-seekers to the gorge's 70,000 acres of cliffs, rivers, and trails.
