Nebraska Taps Federal Funds to Bridge Rural Broadband Gap

Nebraska has secured approval from the Biden-Harris Administration to access more than $405 million through the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program, a cornerstone of the federal "Internet for All" initiative. The Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) approved Nebraska's Initial Proposal in 2024, enabling the state to begin implementation of the massive infrastructure project funded through President Biden's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

The deployment represents one of the most significant broadband expansion efforts in state history. Nebraska legislators have established a clear standard for the initiative, setting a minimum download speed of 100 megabits per second and a minimum upload speed of 100 megabits per second as the target for rural residents. The state created the Rural Broadband Task Force Fund to coordinate implementation, with the Nebraska Information Technology Commission providing administrative oversight and the Public Service Commission offering guidance.

Beyond state efforts, Texas-based Nextlink Internet has committed to investing more than $50 million specifically in Kansas and Nebraska through the Federal Communications Commission's Rural Broadband Opportunity Fund. That investment alone will create broadband service for 14,000 additional customers in Nebraska, complementing the broader state deployment strategy.

The initiative addresses a persistent gap in rural economic development and education access. The Nebraska Legislature's broadband statute reflects bipartisan recognition that reliable, high-speed internet is essential infrastructure for rural communities competing in an increasingly digital economy. The Rural Broadband Task Force is charged with reviewing availability, adoption, and affordability challenges specific to rural Nebraska, with authority to hire consultants and coordinate resources across state agencies.
