ND Tourism Hooks Ice Fishers with $2M Winter Campaign
FARGO, N.D. — North Dakota Tourism unveiled a $2 million marketing blitz Thursday aimed squarely at ice fishing enthusiasts, promoting festivals and resorts across the Red River Valley and Devils Lake region, initially reported by KVRR Local News. The campaign folds into the revitalized 'Hello ND' initiative, which highlights the state's welcoming vibe, uncrowded adventures and slow-travel appeal for immersive outdoor escapes. Officials tout prime spots like Devils Lake, renowned for trophy walleye, and the Red River Valley's perch-rich waters, where anglers deploy up to four poles per state regulation.
Ice conditions this 2025-2026 season look promising, with North Dakota Game and Fish urging safety checks amid variable temperatures. A free fishing weekend for residents 16 and older kicks off Dec. 27-28, drawing locals and out-of-staters to bucket setups or heated icehouses equipped with TVs and home-cooked meals. Tourism partners with resorts offering guided trips and darkhouse spearfishing, capitalizing on the state's 1,500-plus lakes that freeze solid by mid-December.
The push addresses winter tourism dips, building on last year's record ice fishing participation amid mild early freezes. Devils Lake Basin resorts report 20% booking jumps from similar promotions, while Red River Valley events like the Fargo Ice Fishing Expo anchor the campaign. 'Ice fishing is North Dakota's winter heartbeat — rugged, rewarding and ready for newcomers,' said Tourism Director Randy Hatzenbeller.
