The United States is observing the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks. Commemorations are taking place across the nation to mark the event. NBC Nightly News anchor Tom Llamas reported from New York City on the anniversary events. The reporting focused on the remembrance of the attacks and their impact. On September 11, 2001, a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda against the United States occurred. The attacks resulted in 2,977 fatalities, over 25,000 injuries, and substantial long-term health consequences, in addition to at least $10 billion in infrastructure and property damage. The attacks were the deadliest terrorist attacks in world history and the single deadliest incident for firefighters and law enforcement officers in the history of the United States. The attacks began at 8:46 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time when American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. Seventeen minutes later, at 9:03 a.m., United Airlines Flight 175 hit the South Tower. At 9:37 a.m., American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The final hijacked plane, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed into a field in Stonycreek Township, Pennsylvania, at 10:03 a.m. after passengers and crew members attempted to regain control of the aircraft.
