Mount Dora Completes Downtown One-Way Street Conversions on Alexander, Baker, Tremain Streets

Mount Dora has completed the conversion of several downtown streets to one-way traffic, a project that improved traffic circulation, emergency vehicle access, and parking capacity. The changes affect portions of Alexander Street, Baker Street, and Tremain Street.

Downtown Traffic Flow Changes Implemented

The City of Mount Dora completed construction to convert specific downtown streets to one-way traffic. Alexander Street became southbound from 5th Avenue to 4th Avenue after construction began on September 1. Baker Street transitioned to southbound from 5th Avenue to 3rd Avenue after work began on September 7. Tremain Street now flows northbound from 3rd Avenue to 5th Avenue, with construction on that segment having started on September 14.

Project Goals and Benefits

The city implemented these changes to enhance overall traffic circulation in the downtown core. A primary goal of the project was to improve access for emergency vehicles. The initiative also aimed to increase the capacity for downtown parking. The City initially explored adding angled parking downtown to increase parking capacity, but an engineering review determined that angled parking was not feasible due to street width. The resulting one-way design improved circulation and emergency vehicle access while creating additional downtown parking spaces. This approach aligned with the City’s Downtown CRA Parking Studies Update and advanced the FY 2025-2030 Strategic Plan objective to implement parking management strategies and increase downtown parking inventory.

Navigating the New Street System

Construction progressed one street at a time to minimize impacts to downtown businesses, residents, and visitors. Each street reopened under its new one-way traffic pattern as work on that street concluded. Motorists now follow posted traffic signage throughout downtown.

Community Impact

The overall project concluded in September. The city implemented the new traffic patterns to provide long-term benefits for downtown Mount Dora, addressing circulation challenges and parking needs for residents and visitors alike.
