Montgomery Water Main Breaks Spark Boil Water Advisory, Renew Infrastructure Debate
A series of water main breaks on Saturday prompted the Montgomery Water Works and Sanitary Sewer Board to issue a city-wide boil water advisory. Residents are being urged to boil water for at least one minute before using it for drinking, cooking, or brushing teeth. The advisory is expected to remain in effect until at least Monday evening as crews work to repair the damaged pipes and conduct water quality testing.
The water main breaks occurred in various locations across the city, contributing to low water pressure and, in some areas, complete water outages. Emergency crews are distributing bottled water at several locations, prioritizing vulnerable populations and those without transportation.
The incidents have sparked renewed calls for increased investment in Montgomery's aging water infrastructure system. Councilmember Carol Smith stated that the city is exploring funding options, including state and federal grants, to address the problem and prevent future disruptions. She acknowledged that these breaks disrupt people's daily lives and pose public health risks that need to be handled responsibly.
The boil water advisory has led to school and daycare closures, and local restaurants are facing challenges in maintaining operations. Some are temporarily closed, while others offer a limited menu of premade or prepackaged items. City officials advise residents to stay updated on the city's website and social media channels for the latest information regarding the boil water advisory and repair efforts.
While the cause of the breaks is still under investigation, initial findings suggest that the age of the pipes and recent temperature fluctuations contributed to the problems. The city hopes to have the water system fully restored in the coming days.
