Montgomery Steps Up for Autism Acceptance Walk Saturday

National Desk
April 18, 2026
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Day.News) — The Emerson Smith Autism Walk kicks off at 9 a.m. Saturday on the Auburn University at Montgomery campus, drawing walkers from across the River Region to champion autism awareness and support. Organized by Autism Support of Alabama as part of its 21st annual statewide series during Autism Acceptance Month, the Montgomery event runs until 1 p.m. at AUM and builds on a tradition that has unified thousands for local initiatives.[2][3][4] Autism Support of Alabama coordinates walks in nine cities this April, including Boaz on April 5, Birmingham on April 12, and others in Dothan, Tuscaloosa, Huntsville, Fort Payne, Mobile, Enterprise and Montgomery. Proceeds from the series benefit programs serving all 67 Alabama counties, such as safety initiatives, CARE Binders for emergency responders, family grants, post-secondary scholarships and Connect Groups.[2][3] With autism affecting 1 in 36 children nationwide — up to 50,000 Alabamians — the walks fund critical gaps in services.[1][3] Named for Emerson Smith, the Montgomery walk emphasizes community teams and family involvement, echoing past events like the 2017 gathering at 5400 Vaughn Road that rallied participants statewide. Registration remains open via trisignup.com and runsignup.com, with organizers urging teams to form and contact [email protected] for hosting options.[1][2][4] Autism Support of Alabama stresses the event's role in celebrating those on the spectrum while addressing Alabama's growing needs as the fastest-developing disability in the U.S.[1][3]
