Mobile Port Hits Record Cargo in Q1 2026, Fuels Job Boom

MOBILE, Ala. -- The Alabama State Port Authority announced Thursday that the Port of Mobile achieved record cargo volumes in the first quarter of 2026, with a standout 15% increase in steel and automotive imports compared to the same period last year. Initially reported by WAKA Action 8 News, the surge underscores Mobile's growing role as a key Gulf Coast hub for heavy industry shipments. Steel imports, vital for Alabama's manufacturing sector, and automotive parts for assembly plants like Honda's in Lincoln, Ala., propelled the gains amid steady global demand.
Port Executive Director Mike McLellan highlighted the figures during a briefing at the port's main terminal, noting total cargo throughput exceeded prior records by key margins. "This 15% jump in high-value steel and auto imports reflects strong partnerships with shippers and terminal operators," McLellan said. The port handled over 1.2 million tons in these categories alone, boosting efficiency at facilities like the McDuffie Coal Terminal and MCT deep-water berths, which support round-the-clock operations.
The economic ripple is immediate for Mobile and surrounding counties. Logistics firms in Mobile, Prichard and Theodore reported hiring sprees, adding an estimated 450 jobs in trucking, warehousing and crane operations since January. "Our drivers are busier than ever with steel coils heading to Birmingham Steel and auto components to Montgomery," said Tom Reynolds, president of Gulf Logistics Association. This aligns with Alabama's logistics workforce of over 100,000, concentrated in the port's 200-mile hinterland.
As global ports like Corpus Christi report parallel records, Mobile's focus on steel -- up from Asian and European suppliers -- positions it for sustained growth. The authority credits recent dredging projects and rail expansions for handling larger vessels, ensuring Alabama captures more cargo diverted from congested East Coast routes.
