National Desk
April 25, 2026
An off-duty Milwaukee police detective was shot while intervening in an attempted vehicle theft near Water and Buffalo streets in the Historic Third Ward on Thursday afternoon, Jan. 13, around 2 p.m.[1] The suspect attempted to steal a vehicle containing three children inside before abandoning the vehicle and fleeing the scene.[1]
When the off-duty detective confronted the suspect, a struggle ensued and the suspect brandished a firearm, firing multiple shots at the officer and striking him multiple times.[1] The detective returned fire, though there is no indication his gunfire struck anyone.[1] Police apprehended an 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy after spotting their vehicle and conducting a pursuit more than two miles away from the initial scene near 27th and State streets.[1]
Thankfully, no one was fatally injured in the incident.[1] The Milwaukee Office of the FBI and the ATF are assisting in the investigation, which remains active.[1] Criminal charges will be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office in the coming days.[1] The community rallied behind the detective, with two Milwaukee restaurants hosting fundraisers for the officer's recovery.[4]
