Milwaukee Leaders Form Task Force Amid Flood Crisis

National Desk
April 29, 2026
Milwaukee city and county officials met Wednesday to address persistent flooding issues following severe storms on April 13 and 14 that unleashed heavy rain, strong winds, hail and tornadoes across Wisconsin. Gov. Tony Evers declared a state of emergency on April 15, but initial damage assessments show this month's flooding in Milwaukee County falls short of thresholds for federal assistance, according to County Executive David Crowley and city leaders. "The impacts to affected households are significant and taken seriously, at this time, the impacts from this flooding in Milwaukee County do not meet the thresholds required to initiate a FEMA Preliminary Damage Assessment," stated County Communications Director Matt Taube.[1][4] Mayor Cavalier Johnson, County Executive David Crowley and Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District Executive Director Kevin Shafer announced a Flood Mitigation Task Force to evaluate long-term strategies, reduce future storm impacts and gather resident input. The task force is slated to meet soon, amid discussions on state-level recovery support and U.S. Small Business Administration disaster loans for eligible residents, pending final damage reviews.[1] Ald. Scott Pratt separately introduced a communication file on April 17 to spotlight ongoing flooding concerns.[3] The April 15-16 storms prompted the city to issue 4,666 parking citations, a quadrupling from typical enforcement, as Department of Public Works teams managed flood response without suspending operations, unlike August's events. DPW Communications Officer Tiffany Shepherd noted peak-hour focus on complaints yielded 141 tickets during the worst window.[2] This year's smaller-scale damage contrasts with last summer's storms, which triggered formal enforcement pauses from Aug. 11-14.[1][2]
