Michigan Investigates Lettuce as Potential Source of Cyclosporiasis Outbreak

Michigan health officials are investigating a significant increase in cyclosporiasis cases. Authorities indicate early information points to lettuce or salad greens as a potential contributing factor to the outbreak.

The state has documented over 3,300 cases of cyclosporiasis. This parasitic infection affects the small intestine and can cause watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, abdominal cramps, nausea, and fatigue.

Investigations into the source of foodborne illnesses typically involve tracing food products through the supply chain and interviewing affected individuals about their recent food consumption. Public health agencies often issue advisories and recommendations based on their findings to prevent further spread of illness.

Cyclosporiasis is caused by the *Cyclospora cayetanensis* parasite. People become infected by consuming food or water contaminated with the microscopic parasite. Officials have not yet identified a specific brand or type of lettuce linked to the cases.
